Environmental Monitoring’s Mission MISSION "Protecting Water Quality by ensuring compliance with environmental laws." VISION "Leading the way in protecting Water Quality" Within the Water Services Department, Environmental Monitoring is responsible for helping comply with federal, state, and city laws or requirements affecting industrial, commercial, or residential water and sewer users. The city, issues wastewater discharge permits to facilities that discharge process wastewater to the city sanitary sewer collection system. By collecting water quality samples the division supports the department’s needs for compliance and operational data from the water distribution and wastewater systems. Sophisticated, computerized sampling and measuring equipment in addition to manual sample collection techniques are used to collect samples. These samples are then analyzed by the city's Water Services Laboratory. We also respond to public inquiries and concerns about water quality. Our outreach programs educate industry and the public about the impacts than can result when potentially harmful chemicals are dumped into drains. The division also participates in a number of special projects, studies, and emergency response efforts.
